Welcome to the RENEW Blog and to our very first ever blogpost! This definitely feels like a monumental moment for us Ladies. Before we begin with this weeks study, let’s just take some time to thank God for all He’s done and is continuinng to do, in our lives and the lives of those around us. We love you Jesus!

Jesus Changes Water Into Wine

Read

John Chapter 2 (NIV)

On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” 

“Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” 

JESUS AND MARY

His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” 

Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. 

Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” 

WINE

They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realise where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.

Study

This Wedding was held in a place called Cana. The word Cana literally means, “Land of reeds”, relating to the fragile nature of humanity.

The wedding was held on a Tuesday and if you look at the Hebrew calendar you’ll see that the beginning of the week starts on a Sunday, meaning that Tuesday would have been the third day.

We all know the significance of the third day in the Bible, right? 

Of course, these guys didn’t know what we do yet, that Jesus would be raised from the dead on the third day.  

The reason why they chose to celebrate the wedding on a Tuesday relates to the beginning of Creation, when God saw that it was good….. not once, but twice! For this reason the people considered this day to be doubly blessed.

Genesis 1 :10-12  – God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

So, we’ve got this perfect wedding on a perfect day that God had doubly blessed but…… it all went wrong!

Verses 2-3 say this,

Jesus and his disciples were all invited to the banquet, but with so many guests in attendance, they ran out of wine. And when Mary realised it, she came to him and asked, “They have no wine, can’t you do something about it?”

Mary had no doubt about the anointing that was on her son Jesus and what she was saying had real hidden depth.

it’s not so much to do with a lack of wine at a wedding in Cana, the place of fragile man, it’s actually more about a lack of joy.

Mary was actually saying, “They’ve run out of joy, can’t you do something about it?”

What Mary could be saying if it were in today’s language would be, religion has failed. The traditions of religion cannot gladden the heart, but Jesus can.

This very first miracle that Jesus ever performed paints a beautiful picture of what He was sent here to do. Jesus came to bring back our joy by turning tasteless, meaningless water into wonderful tasting wine.

Moses turned water into blood but Jesus’ beautiful grace turned water into wine.

The next glimpse of fragile humanity seen in this story were the stone water pots. The number six represents the number for man as we were created on the sixth day. 

These types of pots were also used for Jewish cleansing rituals. The pots would be filled with water and used to cleanse people before they prayed.

The water in these pots is symbolic for religion, it’s tasteless and meaningless!

Jesus takes the tastless, meaningless water and turns it into the most delighful wine.

The wine is symbolic of the spirit of joy, overflowing so we can take that it into the world.

This week’s Study Scripture

Galatians 5:22-23

But the fruit produced by the Holy Spirit within you is divine love in all its varied expressions

Joy that overflows,
Peace that subdues,
Patience that endures,
Kindness in action,
A life full of virtue,
Faith that prevails,
Gentleness of heart, and
Strength of spirit.

Never set the law above these qualities, for they are meant to be limitless.

  4. God showed me the water represents the Holy Spirit and the wine, or blood represents the blood of Jesus; us being filled with the spirit and with the blood. It reminds me of when Jesus was pierced and water and blood came out….yeah that’s us. That’s what God showed me.

No, we didn’t realise the relevance of the number 6 until we started this study, it was a revelation because when we were praying in to the application steps originally we wanted 7, we couldn’t come up with a 7th ‘R’ that felt right so we left it as 6, we now know that renewed needs to be the 6th step as that is the day God created man. I love how the Holy Spirit guides and leads us. I’m looking forward to you studying with us. Lots of love Rachael xx
